Their Royal Majesties Edward Grey of Lochleven & Marguerite ingen Lachlainn

TRH Edward Grey and Marguerite Ingen Lachlainn

We, Sir Edward Grey of Lochleven & Marguerite ingen Lachlainn, King and Queen of the East Kingdom, have picked Henry VII & early Henry VIII as the time period and theme for Our reign.

Culture:

Henry Tudor of the House of Lancaster, as Henry VII of England, is remembered as the King that ended the War of the Roses by winning a decisive victory at the Battle of Bosworth. Henry stepped up to the throne of a country bitterly divided, exhausted and bankrupt. In order to start the re-knitting of his wounded Kingdom, he married Elizabeth of York, daughter of King Edward IV. He maintained his rule by cunning statecraft, and winning battles. Known for his parsimonious nature, Henry amassed a fortune that later enabled his son and afterward his grand daughter Elizabeth I to rule in a glittering, golden age.

Marian of Edwinstowe

Master Justin du Coeur reports the following:

Marian of Edwinstowe passed away last night. It wasn’t a surprise — we’d pretty much assumed that selling off her books a few months ago was a sign that the end was near. (I did my best to help some books get into the right hands: that seemed appropriate and right.) And word went around a few days ago that it was time. Still, it’s a day for reflection.

Those who are newer probably don’t have a sense of just how important Marian was, both to the Barony and Kingdom. In recent years, she’s just been Old Marian the Baker, but that was by choice: prior to that, she was both one of the senior Laurels *and* senior Pelicans of the Kingdom, and richly deserved both. Her service goes back to the days when rocks were soft — the Pelican was substantially for creating Pikestaff as we know it today. (It wasn’t the first Kingdom newsletter — there had been a couple of attempts prior to that — but she stabilized the model that is still largely the way it works today.)

She was one of the founders of Carolingia, and one of its major formative forces: over the past 15 years, she’s probably been the single most go-to person about why the Barony works the way it does. She was never quite as in-your-face about the sociology and philosophy as myself or Steffan, but knew at least as much and could be quite persuasive about its logic when she needed to be.

And she was just as influential, if not moreso, on the arts side. That was most conspicuous in cooking (make no mistake: she knew more about the subject than anybody else I know, and her library was without peer). She did much to get serious period cooking kick-started in the Society, taking the information from the mundane scholars and teaching it to us: she did as much to shape our Cooks Guild as she did to Pikestaff. It was somehow symbolic that in her latter years, she wound up focused on the most basic, central and often overlooked element of period cooking — bread. Not fancy, not talked about a lot because it was simply an assumption on the table, but utterly central to life.

She was the icon of hospitality in the Barony. I like to run parties, and the Buttery has always been my model of how to do it right. I attended my first Buttery party scarcely two months after joining the Society, and have continued to enjoy them ever since. And in my early Pennsics, the tavern that she co-ran — the Sated Tyger — was the place to go, for good period food and good company. (Nothing even close to it exists today.) One of the things we often forget is that the heart of the SCA, as with any club, isn’t the fighting, the service or the arts, but the people — not just baking the bread, but breaking it with friends, is what melds us together as a society.

More than anything, though, I think what I got from her was perspective. She is the only person I know to resign Peerages not because of a snit or a political spat, but simply because she understood better than anyone that they weren’t just a privilege and rank, but also a job and a responsibility. Some years back, she quietly declared that she had paid her dues, and had had enough of that responsibility; rather than simply shirking it as most would do, she sent a polite letter to the Board resigning all her ranks and titles, so that she could retire to a quieter life. Frankly, we all already knew that she was the best of us; she didn’t have anything to prove any more.

She will be greatly missed, but remembered every time I find a loaf of truly good bread…

April Letter to Pikestaff

Unto the Populace of the Great and Glorious East Kingdom doth Edward and
Marguerite, King and Queen, send fond greetings.

Spring solstice has passed, the days grow long and as the earth
transitions from white to green, the drums of war herald in another
summer.  So We say, let all make ready for chivalry and valor upon the
fields of battle.  Repair your armor, sharpen your blades and string
your bow.  Across the kingdom, Our fine baronies and shires are making
preparations for the mighty host of the East to test it metal and
skill.  We look forward to seeing your contributions.

The coming of spring will also herald in Our grand Crown Tournament to
be held in the Principality of Tir Mara, and the self-determination of
Our Heirs.  We ask for a glorious day of competition amongst the best
Our kingdom has to offer.  Please join us in congratulating Our heirs
and all those who contribute to the grandeur of the day.

At this time we would like to thank Mistress Shannon Gallowglass for her many
years of service to the East Kingdom managing the Pikestaff.  We would like
to Welcome Lady Catherine de Sant Marti as the new East Kingdom Chronicler.

We would also like to thank Lady Alesone Grey, Lord Mael Eoin and Don Ian
Raven of Tadcaster for their work on revamping the East Kingdom

website.  This is great undertaking and We ask that all support them
in this effort.

We would like to remind the populace that polling for the Orders of High
Merit and the Peerages starts on May 1st and will continue for 30 days.

We ask that Our polling orders return their polls promptly.

In Service to the East.
Edward and Marguerite.

Mistress Rannveigr Haakonardottir

Rannveigr Haakonardottir died 26 Jan 2010. The cause of death was breast cancer. She was the first Pelican in the East inducted into the Order specifically for Chirurgeoning. She was a tireless and effective worker, leading her own team of medics, the notorious Old Broad Squad, each year during the Pensic Woods Battle. She was a sweet lady who was well loved within the Chirurgeonate and without. Mudanely, Rannveigr was a medical doctor who received an award for her work with blood during the AIDS Crisis. She was a fine physician, a good and dependable colleague, an able Master Chirurgeon, and a good friend. We will all miss her.

Lady Brithwen de Bores Hulla

Lady Brithwen de Bores Hulla, former chatelaine and seneschal of the Crown Province of Ostgardr, has passed away suddenly, of a pulmonary embolism. She was awarded her Silver Crescent at the first coronation of Konrad and Brenwen.

She was my mentor in the chatelaine’s office. I worked as her deputy for several years before stepping into her shoes as chatelaine for Ostgardr when she became the province’s seneschal. Though in the last couple of years she had stepped back to re-assess what she wanted to do, she was still in touch with many dear friends in the area.

If you knew her, please light a candle, and remember a wonderful woman who helped me discover the joys of helping and being an officer in the SCA.

We have established a fund c/o NERO Hartford on Paypal to raise
funds for her funeral expenses. The e-mail for donations is LuisaWalkerFund@nerohartford.com. Any size donation is welcome, even as small as $1.00. If you send it as cash through Paypal, we can
receive it without Paypal fees and the full amount will be available for use.

Any assistance is appreciated. Any funds that may be left would be
donated to charity in her name.

Lord Wilhelm Baumhecker

Sir Albrecht has sent Us a missive reporting: “After a long and valiant struggle, Lord Wilhelm Baumhecker has passed away. He was the beloved husband of Maestra Ana de Guzman. Willie was a gallant gentleman, courageous fighter, caring father, new grandfather, faithful squire, and good friend. He gave of himself, selflessly and constantly. His loss diminishes our group but it is incomparable to what his life and example brought to it. He will be missed.”

Our sympathies go out to Maestra Ana de Guzman and to all of the Shire of Rusted Woodlands.

Polling

Unto the Eastern Populace,

Thank you to all who have sent recommendations to Us.  We truly appreciate the voice of the Eastern populace and the deeds of these candidates.

We would like to remind all that We will begin Our first pollings on February 1.  This polling is required for all awards of High Merit (Order of Silver Crescent, Maunche, Tygers Combatant, Sagittarius and Golden Rapier) and Peerages (Chivalry, Laurel, Pelican) that We might award during the months of April, May and June, and it is not too early to bring up candidates for later in the summer, or for other awards.

Please realize that We will not be able to visit everyone whom We wish to as often as We would like.  Therefore, if Our Royal progress brings us near the Barony or Shire of a candidate whom you consider worthy of an award, most especially elevation to an order of High Merit or Peerage, We ask that you send us a recommendation by Birka.

We are also looking forward to meeting with the Companions of Our Orders at The Market Day at Birka.

Our second polling will begin on May 1st.
Pollings can be sent via email to: king@eastkingdom.org and queen@eastkingdom.org
